Hello,

The only thing my child struggles with right now is academics (focus, comprehension, retaining information). She gets low grades at school, she is just below average, not too far. She was pulled last year but we refused this year because everything was below her level to accomodate all the kids. We wanted her to be challenged.

Two years ago she was ASD, but with all the treatments and intervention all the weird stuff are gone. Now the school tells us that to get some academic help, she only fits in the ASD category even if she is not a typical one.

What do you think, I know that schools love the money they get on the back of these poor children. What other category can she be under?

She could qualify for an IEP under the diagnosis of learning disability, speech impaired, or other health impaired. Just like ASD diagnosis in itself won't qualify you for services, you can lose the educational diagnosis of autism and still have an IEP if you have a disability.

Here are the categories:

I have to do a private evaluation, because I do not trust the school psychologist. When she did her evaluation 2 years ago, she put a lot of lies and nonsense. For example somebody hit my daughter and she didn't do anything about it. So the girl who hit was the normal one for them and my civilized daughter was abnormal (Even her kindergarten teacher lied).The report mentioned that it included the case managers input, but she was not even aware that my daughter had an evaluation. We didn't complain because we didn't want to put her in trouble and jeopardize her job, she was new to the system and not yet corrupted. She was a very kind person.

I don't trust them, I don't want anything from them, they benefit from us (money wise) more than our kids benefit from them.

I think private evals are a great idea. And I have a son with an IEP--he doesn't have autism--he has severe learning disability and memory retrieval issues. Ask them for an IEP based on LD if that is her current issue.

I'm a special ed teacher and I agree that in your situation you should do a private eval.

Eligibility for services for your child could, as someone else said, fall under all sorts of other categories, including SLD, Specific Learning Disability, or even OHI if she has attention issues.

Given her academic areas of need, I think the team's focus should be on designing supports that will allow her to make progress at grade level, not bickering over what her disability code is! Obviously, pull-outs aren't what she needs, unless they are prepared to provide customized, differentiated supports for her in a small group so that she can access the grade-level curriculum - which, by the way, is the entire PURPOSE of a pull-out, and I'm wondering just why the heck they don't seem to recognize this over where you are!

Sarah thank you so much for your post, this is exactly what we are going to ask for on the next meeting.

If a child on an IEP is homeschooled for 1 or more years and goes back to school. Does She still qualify for special education or not anymore. We plan to bring an outside evaluation.

And if we pull her now, finish the year at home then repeat it again next year. She is behind in reading and writing and there is no point to take her to the next grade with more challenges when the basics are not there.

If a child is eligible for special education services, she continues to be eligible until a team determines that she is no longer qualified.

Thus, if you pull her for a year and do homeschooling, she will be able to come back into the public school system and receive services when she returns.

What kind of home schooling will you do? Will you do it yourself, or get tutors, or do you have some other plan?

And would you mind telling us a bit more about what specific areas of reading and writing she struggles with? for example, in terms of reading comprehension, what strategies does she already use and what does she lack? Have her teachers informed you??
