Malice and Asperger Syndrome

Paper
Autism Independent UK

Doris Lessing, in her novel, The Fifth Child (Lessing, 1989), describes the impact on a family, previously loving and stable, of having a fifth child. This child in his intransigence and his propensity for outrageous and hurtful behaviour, challenged all their liberal pre-conceptions and brought the family to the brink of dissolution. This kind of maliciousness is not something that is normally associated with Asperger Syndrome: too many sufferers seem too innocent, too law abiding, and too unaware of their own self interest to be described as malicious. Yet this is the best translation of the word that Asperger used for several of the children that he described in his classic paper of 1944 (Asperger, 944), see (Frith, 1991) for translation. In this paper I shall consider whether children and adults with pervasive developmental disorder can sometimes be rightly described as being malicious; how can this be recognised; and some ideas about management.

That does not sound like Asperger's to me. I am not saying a child might not have that DX but even my son carries like 6 different Dx. ADHD being the most obvious or Aphasia both of which are pretty clearly seen when you meet him. He also has PTSD and XMRV. From the article what of it I read it seems clear to be ODD which is no joke. Those kids can be scary sorry if I am offending anyone but we have a little of everything in our family so I am clear on the difference.

The article says it only affects a minority of people with AS, but you have an interesting point that it could be a co-morbid condition like ODD with AS. I thought the interesting point was that some of the purpose of the malicious acts was to disrupt social situations, which sounds plausible.

I know someone with AS who is malicious, which she justifies as getting even with society. One reason "society" reacts negatively to her is that she is mean and self-absorbed -- and she enjoys getting people upset. Does she really have AS? Maybe she really has an anti-social personality that was misdiagnosed as AS?

I have three kids and a husband who, while not autistic or Aspergers, are still severely affected by petrochemicals, food allergies, mercury poisoning and embedded infections. My whole family is on "the diet" and takes supplements, and also avoids a whole range of allergens. When they don't, they all get mean. My autistic son gets very weepy and hates himself, my youngest dd gets agressive and mean--"malicious" as is discussed in the above article wouldn't be far off--my oldest dd gets moody and sarcastic and my husband gets very touchy and angry at everyone. It's horrible. I'm sure I'm no different.

I think a comorbid condition is what they were seeing with the malicious kids. Bacteria? Embedded infection, like strep? My youngest dd is a bright ray of sunshine when well, incredibly difficult when she's not. Our family is a hard place to be when we're off diet, a wonderful place when we are all on our game.

I remember when we first began the Feingold diet years ago. We drove in the car as a family for 13 hours with no TV and there was NO FIGHTING!! I was in shock. I look at all the depressed and angry and "lazy" and antisocial kids out there and I want to figure out a way to get them all on biomed interventions. I weep for what our society is doing to our generation.

I agree with you Amanda. All the junk that people eat nowadays has to have a major affect on their behavior/attitude. If people engaged in "clean" eating our society would be better off. I think a lot of people have reactions to certain substances, whether food or environmental factors. Most people just don't make the connection or act to change it if they do think about it. It's "easier" to keep things the way they are. It makes me wonder how different our daily interactions would be with others if everyone were as healthy as they could be. I think at the very least, our kids would find more compassion in the world. dory
