Hi all. Well our DAN doctor recently told us to be careful of epsom salts because alot of them have metals in them. I think he said that some of them are imported from china or other countries and may have metals...

Anyway I have been using epsom salt baths for my son from time to time and am wondering if I can continue using them. I have been buying the Target brand epsom salt, but i cant find more info about it online or if it contains any metals. It says it is made in the USA, so hopefully that is a good sign..

My husband actually just picked up some from walmart though and on the back of the package it said to go to a website and see the levels of metals for it.. Turns out it had quite a few metals, cobalt, cadmium, arsenic (3 ppm) lead (3 ppm), and mercury (.3 ppm). This is one distributed by Cumberland Swan. There are others at this link.. If you do a search on the page and type in epsom salt, you can find them..

I had no idea about this until the dr told me and am now hesitant to use any epsom salt baths.. Just thought I would post about this..

Jen

I would imagine that epsom salts are can be used for other purposes such as gardening/fertilizers since they are a source of sulfur and magnesium. I would definitely be sure you are buying pharmaceutical grade epson salts (USP)

In my understanding, anything from the earth that has minerals, is also going to have some heavy metals like our food supply. It's kind of a 'catch 22'. The epsom salts help to increase sulphation and improve our ability to detox, however they also do contain trace amounts of the heavy metals we need to detox. Make sure you get the kind that specifies, "For human consumption" from the pharmacy section. They usually have a decreased amount of heavy metals-compared to the ones used for fertilizers at the garden shops. We can not avoid all exposure. We'd have to stop eating fruits and veggies if we were going to try. This is one reason why increasing our ability to detox these toxins is so important.

We used epsom salts almost every night for 5 years and only saw good with it's continual use. So I felt very confident in using them.

Researchers and physicians report that raising magnesium levels may:

Improve heart and circulatory health, reducing irregular heartbeats, preventing hardening of the arteries, reducing blood clots and lowering blood pressure.
Improve the body's ability to use insulin, reducing the incidence or severity of diabetes.
Flush toxins and heavy metals from the cells, easing muscle pain and helping the body to eliminate harmful substances.
Improve nerve function by regulating electrolytes. Also, calcium is the main conductor for electrical current in the body, and magnesium is necessary to maintain proper calcium levels in the blood.
Relieve stress. Excess adrenaline and stress are believed to drain magnesium, a natural stress reliever, from the body. Magnesium is necessary for the body to bind adequate amounts of serotonin, a mood-elevating chemical within the brain that creates a feeling of well being and relaxation.
While increasing magnesium levels, Epsom Salt also delivers sulfates, which are extremely difficult to get through food but which readily absorb through the skin. Sulfates, which are minerals, serve a wide variety of functions in the body, playing a vital role in the formation of brain tissue, joint proteins and the mucin proteins that line the walls of the digestive tract. Sulfates also stimulate the pancreas to generate digestive enzymes and are believed to help detoxify the body's residue of medicines and environmental contaminants.

I called Kroger about their epsom salts and the lady who called back said their levels test at 0.001% of metals in each batch.
